5 Stars Nikon D90 Meets All Expectations
My previous digital camera was a Canon Powershot (an excellent little camera) which I’ve had for several years. Prior to my vacation to Colorado this year, I wanted to invest in a serious digital SLR. After studying reports, handling different cameras at the local retailers, and talking to acquaintances about their cameras, I decided on the Nikon D90 with the 18-105 VR kit lens. I also purchased the 70-300 VR zoom lens in anticipation of the wildlife that is prevalent where I was going. It took me a couple of days to become familiar with the features and capabilities of the camera, which are very impressive. The controls and menus are intuitive and the 3″ Hi-res viewing monitor is a joy to work with. The results on the trip more than met my expectations. The vibration reduction feature of both lenses worked well and my hand-held shots were crisp. The one aspect of the purchase that is less than stellar is the Nikon software program supplied to organize and view the photos.
5 Stars Blown Away
I’ve had a religious conversion, a change in faith. All my life I’ve used a Canon. With the D 90, I’ve become a Nikon man. Not a conman, but an enthusiastic Nikonman. I’ve had it now for 10 months have have photographed with it under vastly different conditions in the US, Canada and the Middle East, from bright daylight, to extensive low light to glaring desert light, indoors, architectural subtleties and people photos, and it just comes up trumps each time. While an amateur can have fun with it, an advanced photographer can do more justice to this amazing camera. The thinking and action time is substantially faster if you get to learn the camera well. The manual contains everything of course, but you would do better to get one of the good books on D 90 that have become available. It will guide you through the priorities and make you enjoy the camera till it becomes second nature reflex. I don’t think I will buy another camera for a long time. I’ve not been using the DVD as I have separate equipment for this. I stick to the basics and love it. Surprisingly, I found out during my travels, that there is a growing ‘community’ of like minded D90 users with whom you may share your experiences and communicate. Its kind of becoming a cult camera. That itself is a huge compliment to Nikon and the D90.
5 Stars I Love this Camera
I spent a long time looking for the best camera for me, reading the customer reviews, comparing the features. I found especially helpful reviews by a guy who cataloged his journey via video,… he had first got and criticized the D90, purchased another, and then returned to the D90.
In my journey, i was ready to purchase a different Nikon camera, which was a little less costly, and weighted less. I decided to drop by a local store to FEEL the camera in my hands,.. and that helped me a lot,… the less costly and lighter camera (the new D5000), but it didn’t feel as good to me. My fingers are long (for a girl:)) and the D90 clearly felt a lot better to me. That sealed my decision for the D90.
I am enjoying getting to know how to use it (used the Magic Lantern Series guide, and Ken [...] which were both helpful). With so much flexibility comes lots of options and therefor necessary learning. From the physical film days, I understood SLR photography basics,… in the digital world it is just some much easier to get the shot you want, once you learn a few things about light balance and color balance adjustments.
The only thing I wish it had were a built in GPS for geo-tagging. I see that one can be purchased, but it looks bulky and hear that start up time and battery drain can be factors with it,… and I just don’t want to deal with that.
Good luck out there.
5 Stars It’s a D300 for half price.
I had the D300 and loved it until this came out.
The D300 is great, but it can be complicated at times.
The D90 is a D300 in the body of a D70. Sure, there are other features on the D300; metal pro body and seals – but when it comes to speed, handling, and image quality – you will be hard pressed to see a difference.
Buy the D300 to impress people.
Buy the D90 to take awesome photos, and with the money you saved, you can fund that next awesome lens you wanted.
Seriously, it’s that good.
Former D300 owner, have also owned the D80 and D70.
Presently own the D40x, D90 (new – and love), F100 and a FE. Don’t ask me about lenses – I own too many as it is.
ps. I sold my D300 and got the D90.
5 Stars The honest brutal truth of the Pros and Cons
Pros:
* So glad I bought this camera, LOVE it.
